Introduction

Windows Mobile 7, renamed as Windows Phone 7 is the latest mobile operating system by Microsoft. It is launched on February 15, 2010, at, Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona.

Applications and games for Windows Phone are developed using Visual Studio and designed with Expression Blend. The combined power of these tools will make Windows Phone the easiest mobile platform to develop for. It brings with it a host of new features and services that make it one of the richest mobile platforms in the market.

Some of its features are as follows:

Requires minimal hardware, 4 GB Flash on 256 MB of RAM

Multi-touch capacity screen

8GB of internal memory

GPS sensors

Smooth transitional user interface

Informative lock screen and auto-hidden top status bar

Good Office integration and support

Bing search page and functionality

Easy setup for Windows Live, Google and Yahoo! Mail

Functional QWERTY keyboard

Cool camera software.

Tellme voice search

Powerful Outlook email, calendar, and contacts client

Zune HD functionality

Creating Windows Phone 7 Applications

Windows phone 7 applications is developed using .net framework. For developing the application we can use two approaches

Use silver light for Windows Phone

Use XNA framework (XNA is Microsoft’s game development framework)

To get started first we need to download the windows phone 7 development toolkit. You can download it from the link given below:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=49b9d0c5-6597-4313-912a-f0cca9c7d277&displaylang=en

The main steps to develop a Windows Mobile Application are as follows:

1)      Create a Windows Phone 7 Application

2)      Create a database

3) Create a WCF Web service

4) Consume Web service from Windows Phone 7 Application

These steps can be illustrated with an example

Create a Windows Phone 7 Application

1. To create a Windows Phone Application, open Microsoft VS 2010 Express for Windows Phone

2. From File->New Project-> Silver light for Windows Phone -> Windows Phone Application

Give the project name as WindowsPhoneApp.

3. In the MainPage.Xaml ,you can design the UI as follows

The XAML code snippet for UI design is as follows:

<Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="Transparent">
      <Grid.RowDefinitions>
            <RowDefinition Height="100"></RowDefinition>
            <RowDefinition Height="100"></RowDefinition>
            <RowDefinition Height="*"></RowDefinition>
      </Grid.RowDefinitions>
      <StackPanel x:Name="TitlePanel"Grid.Row="0" Margin="12,17,0,28">
            <TextBlock Text="MY FIRST APPLICATION" HorizontalAlignment="Center"VerticalAlignment="Center"FontSize="26" FontFamily="Verdana"Foreground="Coral"></TextBlock>
     </StackPanel>
     <Grid x:Name="TopPanel" Grid.Row="1">
           <StackPanel x:Name="HeaderPanel"Grid.Row="0" Margin="12,17,0,28">
                       <TextBlock Text="STUDENT DETAILS" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" FontSize="26" FontFamily="Verdana" Foreground="WhiteSmoke"></TextBlock>
           </StackPanel>
     </Grid>
     <Grid x:Name="BodyPanel" Grid.Row="2">
           <Grid.RowDefinitions>
                 <RowDefinition Height="70"></RowDefinition>
                 <RowDefinition Height="70"></RowDefinition>
                 <RowDefinition Height="70"></RowDefinition>
                 <RowDefinition Height="70"></RowDefinition>
                 <RowDefinition Height="60"></RowDefinition>
           </Grid.RowDefinitions>
           <Grid.ColumnDefinitions>

Create a database

In sql server create a new database named WindowsPhoneDB.Create a table named student and import the database to the server explorer

Create a WCF Service

1) Right click on the project name in Solution Explorer and Add New Project.

Here the service name is MyTestService.

3) Add a LINQ to SQL Class
