British Columbia Hospitals

AI Automation for British Columbia Hospitals

Fewer manual workflows. Faster referrals, pharmacy reviews and bed transfers. Built with your informatics team, live in weeks.

Hospital staff spend hours a day on calls, records and reports that never needed a clinician in the first place. Post discharge follow up. Referrals retyped from a fax. Reports assembled by hand each month. That work does not show up on a budget line, so it never gets fixed. It just gets absorbed.

Cabot builds AI agents that take that work off your team and write the result straight into Oracle Health or MEDITECH Expanse, the record system you already run. Built for FIPPA, hosted in Canada, live in weeks rather than a multi year platform rollout.

The work slowing your team down probably looks like this

Calls that take licensed staff away from patients

Post discharge follow up, pre procedure confirmations, unit lines. Individually small, and several hundred a week is a role nobody budgeted for.

Referrals and records retyped by hand

A fax or a PDF arrives holding structured information, and someone has to read it and key it in. Even where eReferral is in place, faxes and PDFs still arrive from outside the network. Slow, and every retype is a chance to get a date of birth wrong.

Reports and reviews assembled manually

Pharmacy medication reviews, unit level reporting, handover summaries. The judgment is the job. Assembling the list should not be.

Bed flow decisions made on incomplete information

A command centre dashboard shows the current state. Somebody still makes thirty calls to change it. When units are full and patients are waiting for placement elsewhere, every hour of delay holds a bed.

Tell us which workflow is costing you the most. We will tell you whether automation can realistically improve it.

Four ways we put AI to work in your hospital

Each is built around the outcome it produces, not the model behind it. Together they make up our AI agents for hospital workflows.

01

AI voice agents

Handle the administrative calls that interrupt clinical work: post discharge follow up, pre procedure confirmation, unit lines, command centre coordination. Anything clinical routes to a person immediately, by design, not by setting. Every call documents itself in the record.

02

Referral and document intelligence

Reads referrals and outside records that arrive as fax or PDF and hands them over structured, with a confidence score and a person in the loop for anything uncertain. It sits alongside provincial eReferral and can run as referral document analysis on locally hosted models when the documents cannot leave your environment.

03

Pharmacy intelligence

Assembles the medication use reports and review lists a pharmacist currently builds by hand, and flags patients who need a review rather than making someone dig for them. Community and unit calls are handled and logged the same way.

04

Operational intelligence and workflow automation

Unit level reporting, handover summaries and bed and transfer coordination, generated from data already in your systems rather than assembled by hand or stuck behind an informatics backlog. It draws on predictive analytics for patient flow where the data supports it.

See any of these on a real workflow before you decide anything.

What this looks like in practice

An honest note. None of the work below is a British Columbia hospital yet. 16+ years of healthcare delivery sit behind Cabot, and these are the engagements that transfer most directly to a hospital problem. When a British Columbia hospital engagement can be named publicly, it leads this section.

Interoperability

Built the integration layer and standards mapping that connected a clinical product to the systems around it, the same problem a hospital faces from the other direction.

Analytics

Turned data that already existed into reporting clinicians and administrators could actually use, the same shape as the unit level reporting problem above.

Device integration

Built the interface carrying monitoring device output into the clinical workflow that uses it.

Ask how we would approach your situation, and we will tell you honestly which of these compares and which does not.

What your privacy officer will ask first, and how we integrate

Three questions open every health authority conversation before anything about capability. Where does the data live, and who can reach it. With AI there is a third: where do the models run.

FIPPA

British Columbia health authorities are public bodies under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). Every build is designed against it from the architecture stage. Role based access decided before code is written, encryption in transit and at rest, audit logging on who saw what and when, retention rules applied at the point of capture. We supply what your privacy impact assessment needs: data flows, access roles, hosting locations and vendor access.

Canadian data residency

Personal health information is hosted and processed in Canada by default, inside your environment. If a design would store sensitive personal information outside Canada, we say so at design time, so the supplementary assessment in your privacy impact assessment is straightforward.

Where the models run

The models reading your documents and running your calls run inside Canadian infrastructure. Personal health information is not used to train a model, ours or anyone else's.

Responsible AI in British Columbia

The Ministry of Health's Responsible AI Policy Framework applies to AI that vendors supply to health authorities. It expects a vendor assessment before engagement, approved uses defined in writing, and a person in the loop wherever AI supports diagnosis. We design to that from the first scoping call. Anything clinical stays with a person, and every action the AI takes is logged and reviewable.

Integration

Everything above only counts if it writes into the record you already run. Voice agent documentation, referral output and AI generated reporting write into Oracle Health and MEDITECH Expanse. The interface queue on your side, not the AI, is usually what sets the timeline, and we say so in the first conversation. Our EHR integration with Oracle Health and MEDITECH and our healthcare privacy and compliance practice cover the detail.

Ask an Engineer Directly

How a first engagement actually runs

Solutions architects and integration engineers who scope the work stay on it through delivery. Where the work touches clinical workflow, we expect to be corrected by your clinical staff, and we build the time for that in.

01

Agree the number

Before scoping anything, we agree which measure this is meant to move and where it sits today.

02

Scope one workflow

One unit, one call type, one intake stream. Small enough to run as a project, real enough that the result means something.

03

Deploy, integrate, measure

Deployed with your informatics team, integrated into the record, measured against the number agreed at step one.

Engineers You Can Put on a Call Tomorrow.

The people who scope the work are the people on the first call. Bring your integration lead and your privacy officer, and the technical questions get answered in the room, not afterwards.

You do not have to decide about an AI strategy. You have to decide about one unit.

Questions British Columbia hospitals ask us

How much does a first engagement cost, and how long does it run?

One workflow, scoped as a project with a written start and end, priced against the number it is meant to move. Book a short call and we give you both after one scoping conversation.

Can BC hospitals use AI tools under FIPPA, and where does our data live?

Yes, with a privacy impact assessment like any other new system. We host in Canada by default and never use personal health information to train a model.

Does your AI fit BC's Responsible AI Policy Framework?

We design to its expectations and support the vendor assessment your team runs. Uses are agreed in writing first, and a person stays in the loop for anything clinical.

Do you work with our Oracle Health or MEDITECH Expanse environment?

Yes. Everything we deploy writes into the record on both. What varies by hospital is the interface queue, not whether integration is possible.

How do we get started?
